VoteVets Cheers Bi-Partisan Senate Bill to Block Military Aid to Syria

 ·, Press Release

Washington, DC – The largest group of progressive veterans in America, with over 360,000 supporters,, today is cheering bipartisan Senate legislation that would prohibit the United States from using any funds to militarily aid the still-chaotic and terror-related Syrian opposition.

The legislation, introduced by Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT), Tom Udall (D-NM), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Mike Lee (R-UT) would ban the Department of Defense, the CIA and all other intelligence agencies from funding any military, paramilitary or covert operations in Syria.  The legislation would not affect humanitarian aid.

VoteVets has opposed the President's decision to arm the Syrian rebels.

“Once we introduce weapons, we have zero control over them,” said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of  “We know Sunni insurgents, connected to the same groups that killed American troops and still target the Iraqi Army and Iraqi government to this day are a part of the opposition. We know al-Qaeda is connected to the opposition.  We simply cannot afford to have our weapons make it into the hands of those who target the US and its allies.”

“Furthermore, it has become clear that no amount of involvement will be enough for some in Washington,” he continued.  “No sooner was it announced that we were sending light weapons, when there were calls for heavier weaponry.  If we introduce heavy weapons, there will be calls for boots on the ground.  We know where this slippery slope leads – America’s involvement in yet another civil war in the Middle East.  It is time to press the pause button, and that’s exactly what this bi-partisan legislation does.  The Senate should act immediately and vote on it.”
