Statement on Firing of Attorney General Sessions, from VoteVets

Vets Group Says National Security, Survival of the Republic at Stake With Mueller Probe

“Given his writings in the past that show hostility to the Mueller investigation and a desire to hamstring it, we demand that Acting Attorney General Whitaker leave Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein in charge of overseeing the special counsel…”

WASHINGTON, DC – The following is a statement of Will Fischer, Director of Government Relations for VoteVets.org, on the firing of Jeff Sessions:

“It is of absolutely utmost importance, for the very security of the United States, that the Mueller probe continue, unhindered, and without any change to its structure.

Should this probe not be allowed to continue what it started, it will be a green light to all enemy powers around the world to attack America’s democratic process, knowing they can get away with it, as long as their preferred candidate emerges victorious.  At that point, the vote becomes worthless, and we are no longer a functioning Republic.

Therefore, given his writings in the past that show hostility to the Mueller investigation and a desire to hamstring it, we demand that Acting Attorney General Whitaker leave Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein in charge of overseeing the special counsel, and effectively recuse himself. He has been installed as Attorney General for one reason – that Donald Trump believes he will protect him from Robert Mueller.  If Mr. Whitaker believes in the rule of law, and the oath he has taken, he will not interfere with the Russia investigation.

Like Mr. Whitaker, we men and women who wore the uniform, took an oath to protect the Constitution, and all that it stands for.  At the core of that is a free and fair vote.  We will not betray our oath, and neither should any elected official, or cabinet member.”

Whitaker wrote this op-ed for CNN, last year, entitled, “Mueller’s Investigation of Trump Is Going Too Far:”  https://www.cnn.com/2017/08/06/opinions/rosenstein-should-curb-mueller-whittaker-opinion/index.html?no-st=1541620647
