Statement of Major General (Ret.) Paul D. Eaton on Cancellation of North Korea Talks

“Dialogue between all parties involved must continue, and any saber rattling that may inadvertently start a war must stop, immediately.”

Washington, DC – VoteVets Senior Adviser, retired Major General Paul D. Eaton, is issuing the following statement in response to Donald Trump canceling talks with Kim Jong-un, this morning:

“My favorite rumored quote of Winston Churchill’s is, ‘It is better to jaw jaw, than to war war.’  I think of that, today, with the news that Donald Trump has broken off planned talks with North Korea.  The alternative to talking is millions of lives snuffed out, including a great many of our men and women in uniform, on the Korean peninsula.

Dialogue between all parties involved must continue, and any saber rattling that may inadvertently start a war must stop, immediately.

Finally, it is now of utmost importance that Congress pass legislation, and override a veto, if necessary, that limits the ability of this president to order a first-strike on North Korea.  We must send the message to all that our Constitution still is in effect, and that war will not start, unless debated and voted on, in Congress, first.”
