Military Veterans Launch Ad Asking Rep. Pearce to Support New Mexico Parks, Vets and Families by Supporting the Land and Water Conservation Fund Pearce Voting Record Has Been in Opposition to Vital Conservation Fund that is Set to Expire on Sep. 30

ALBUQUERQUE— The largest progressive veterans group in America, VoteVets, is running newspaper full-page ads in New Mexico this week asking U.S. Representative Steve Pearce (NM-02) to support funding for New Mexico parks by agreeing to support permanent reauthorization of and full funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). The full-page ads are running across the state today, asking readers to urge Rep. Pearce change course from his previous opposition to LWCF.

LWCF is one of our nation’s most important programs for ensuring that Americans have access to and can enjoy parks, recreational facilities, and other public lands.  LWCF has provided over $310 million for over 1,200 recreation and conservation and recreation projects in New Mexico since the program was established in 1964. It has provide funds for projects in every new Mexico county that improve public lands access, uphold family outdoor traditions, create places for kids to be more active, and foster veterans’ recovery in the outdoors.

Retired Major General Paul D. Eaton, senior advisor to VoteVets said, “LWCF is important to protect outdoor areas that our families recreate in year after year. These are places that create American traditions and memories that become part of our cultural identity.”

Many veterans believe the preservation of military heritage sites and the upkeep of Revolutionary War and Civil War battlefields funded through LWCF help teach future generations the sacrifice of American service members throughout history.

H.R. 502, which would permanently reauthorize LWCF, is currently co-sponsored by 232 bi-partisan members of Congress, including 38 Republicans.  The ads encourage Representative Pearce to join these other members of Congress and co-sponsor H.R. 502 in order to support our parks, veterans, and families.

The VoteVets ads are running today in the Albuquerque Journal, Las Cruces Sun-News, and Silver City Daily Press and on August 30 in the Valencia County News Bulletin.
